The sporting world is in shock following the sudden death of 27-year-old Norwegian biathlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken, who was found dead on Christmas Eve. Bakken, a top contender for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina (6–22 February), was discovered in his hotel room at Lavazè in Italy’s Trentino region during a training camp.
The International Biathlon Union confirmed the passing of the young star, describing him as an athlete who left a profound mark on the sport.
Tragic discovery during training
Italian authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. According to Langrenn.com, Bakken was found wearing an altitude mask—a device designed to restrict oxygen intake to simulate high-altitude conditions, commonly used by elite athletes in preparation for major competitions.
History of heart issues
Bakken’s career had previously been sidelined by health scares:
2022 Diagnosis: The Norwegian champion was diagnosed with myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle), forcing a temporary withdrawal from competitive racing.
The Comeback: Despite his medical history, he had successfully returned to full training and was officially registered for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
A rising legend
At just 27, Bakken was already a powerhouse in the biathlon world. He was a European Champion in the 10km sprint and a double relay gold medallist, boasting four World Cup victories. He was widely regarded as the new symbol of Norway’s dominance in the sport and a heavy favourite for Olympic gold this February.
The investigation by Italian police remains ongoing to determine if his previous heart condition or the use of the training mask played a role in the tragedy.
